The UN Special Rapporteur, Ms Reem Alsalem, concluded a ten-day official visit to the UK to assess the situation of violence against women and girls (VAWG), with a full report due to the Human Rights Council in June 2025. The visit included meetings with UK Government ministers, devolved administrations, parliamentarians, and civil society organisations.
Ms Alsalem expressed appreciation for the UK’s cooperation but noted missed opportunities to engage with the NHS, the Ministry of Education, and immigration removal centres. Her report offered action-oriented recommendations aligned with the UK’s international human rights obligations under treaties like CEDAW and the Istanbul Convention.
