Police Chiefs to reconsider ‘Sex Work’ Guidance

A legal challenge means The National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC), who oversee policing across England and Wales, will now review its controversial ‘Sex Work’ guidance by formally consulting on it, for the first time. The guidance, used by police forces across the country, currently advises working with online pimping sites as ‘key partners’, believes women involved in ‘survival sex’ are not necessarily exploited and frames prostitution as ‘work’ throughout.
The move comes after legal proceedings were initiated by human rights group, Not Buying It, who view the guidance, and lack of consultation in its creation, a breach of equality law. As a result, the NPCC is due to commence the consultation process by 1 April 2024.
