A recent inquiry into human trafficking examined the growing scale and complexity of modern slavery in the UK, with over 16,000 potential victims referred in 2022 alone. While the Modern Slavery Act 2015 set out foundational protections, the inquiry found key shortcomings—especially in defining sexual exploitation and safeguarding victims under new immigration laws.
Rhoda Grant MSP, and co-convenor of the CPG on CSE, gave evidence during the inquiry, emphasising the need to reduce demand for sexual exploitation through legislative reform. Rhoda also pointed to legislation in France that prohibits websites from advertising or profiting from prostitution, enabling French law enforcement to quickly tackle and shut down new websites.
